If only my Viking ancestors could have seen me in a beige Jimny called Ox, with a roof top tent, all by myself in the Richtersveld; they would have been stunned. I'm eternally grateful that some of my ancestors immigrated to South Africa in the 1800's because that is where I was born and where my Camp 4x4 adventure began in April 2025.
I recently returned to South Africa after living in the UK for 28 years. Wanting to rediscover my country and it's incredibly beautiful people, I decided to hire a 4x4 and get going.
Camp 4x4, who are based in Cape Town, and specialize in Jimny hire, were the perfect company to send me on my way. Jono made sure I understood how Ox worked and I headed up the West Coast towards the Orange River.
I'm not going to bore you with exactly where I went in this stunning, magnificent, friendly country, but I will tell you a bit more about Ox and Camp 4x4. The vehicle I hired (Ox) was absolutely perfect for the trip. It was my home for a month. Ox came into his own navigating tricky terrain in the mountain desert, called the Richtersveld. Ox was equipped with everything I needed. I was sad to hand Ox back after a month, but the genuine friendliness and sense of adventure from the people at Camp 4x4 in Cape Town will ensure I return for my next adventure.
